Judge Sarah T Hughes was my benefactor.
I was born in Dallas and raised on Normandy St in Highland Park.I started mowing the grass at Sarah's house, only a few houses up the street. I had no idea of the power she posessed.
At 10 years old, Sarah, as she told me to call her, came to the house and took me up to the Highland Park Junior High School to see a helicopter that was about to land on the football field. This helicopter went around in a circle, way up there, and then a hat came out of it, and sailed towards the ground.
I took of running and beat others to the Stetson hat that had been thrown out.
I got it!
I ran back to Sarah T, showed it to her, and she escortsd me back to the helicopter to give it back to Senator Lyndon B Johnson.
I was introduced to him, amd he said "get in here" and I sat on his lap as the helicopter took off again. We flew around again in a wide circle, and then landed to a roaring crowd.
Sarah introduced me to Lyndon, and that was the beginnng of our knowing each other.
When I graduated from Texas A&M many years later in 1960, Sarah pinned my 2nd Lt bar on one side, and Lyndon pinned the other bar on my other shoulder.
I never realized it until years later,, that I had a "rabbi" watching over me, and adjusting my career quietly.
Such is the way of silent benefactors.
