The purpose of this Message Board was/is to be an official Dallas Historical Society place where members can post queries, stories, research pertaining to Dallas.
Most of us "oldsters" here love this M.B. It has a special place in our hearts.
In fact - as just one example - beginning in 2004 and continuing for 3 years about 20 of us contributed to a research project here that ended up being presented at Legacies and is now a permanent part of the Texas Portal/UNT.
There has been much invaluable info over the years posted here from history to topographical/geological to cartography to purely human interests accounts and memories. All by various members and guests. It has been used countless times for research by researchers, authors, students and just the amateur lover of all things Dallas.
I for one shall mourn if this Board ceases. The only reason I became inactive was because my knowledge of Dallas history had come to a conclusion and the Board itself was in danger of crashing from an archaic database and other factors.
There are already several choices set up that were formed a few years ago by DHS itself and by various individual members that had become "family".
Facebook by Dallas Hist. Soc. is one (I am not a member and will not be) If you go to the official DHS Home page you can find various alternatives.
Dallas History Free Forums is another alternative of an unofficial forum. We started off as a place where our "dysfunctional family" that posted on the official board could "talk" and remember and help others. Facebook (all, not just the DHS FB) captured the total interest of many of our members and they quit us completely. Consequently due to lack of interest DHS Forum has become almost dormant. I got tired of talking to myself and would check in but not post much.
3 or 4 have loyally remained there and now about 5 of us are trying to revive DHS Free Forums. Anyone is welcome and there are myriads of sub forums for any interest - even politics.
In fact, Ken (now here) found us and posted a question about Oak Cliff. We answered him and pointed him to this official message board.
There are numerous "memory" boards already around. Just do a search.
Finally, there is absolutely no reason why a person cannot post at more than one board. It is not an either/or choice.
Just like Wayne, Ernie, Steve,Paul, Bill, Fred and I and others post here at the M.B. Phorum and at DHS Free Forum.
In fact I know several more who "lurk" both here and at DHS Free Forum but never comment. To have any board or forum viable there must be response and activity - even if ocassionaly and there also must be some humanity and graciousness shown by poster interactions and some on site administration.
