I didn't know KLIF was ever anything but a "Music and News" format, oriented toward teenagers but with news coverage rivaled by none in Texas. But then, I left Dallas after 1972, never to live there again. Well, I did live "part time" in Denton in the early nineties, commuting from the Rio Grande Valley. KLIF was owned by "The Old Scotsman," Gordon McClendon. McClendon was quite a personality, and though he did not invent it (a partner at a smaller station in Nebraska did), he took the Top 40 format to a tops in the country rating at KLIF in the fifties and sixties. At one time, KLIF was the "Cat's Meow" in radio, not just in Dallas or Texas, but the nation. Two disk jockeys there, Ron Chapman and Russ Knight, were the best.
