Re: Old Rootbeer stands

I carhopped at Weber's at Oak Lawn and Avondale starting in the Summer of 1946. The owner was Mr. Larry Walker and when I started, he hired only Male employees. He paid us $1.00 a day plus our tips. Most of the boys were in high school. I was promoted later to working on the inside and running
the cash register (NCR). We sold nothing but Weber's Root Beer, Frosties with Root Beer. and one dip of ice cream, 15 cents, Sundaes, Good sized Banana Splits, 30 cents and milk shakes and malts. No sandwiches or other food items. Mr. Walker later changed the Webers name to Larry's Root Beer and placed a big neon sign on top of the building. During football season, Dallas High Schools used Dalhi Stadium which was at the foot of Oak Lawn Ave. The Weber's lot was a madhouse after football games on friday nights. We did not have enough carhops to serve the crowd so we just turned them out of their cars and served them over the counter! We had a gravel lot and those rich old Highland Park boys would burn off in their automobiles or on their "Famous James" motorcycles and spew gravel! I worked for Larry Walker for 3 Summers, 1946, 1947 and 1948. Now that I think back, it was a valuable and interesting part of my life. I will always remember Mr. Walker, His wife Viola and his young Son, Tillman. All three are now deceased.
Bill Barnes
